The Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum: MSU’s Spaceship on Campus

If you’ve ever walked through Michigan State’s campus and thought, “Whoa, is that a spaceship?”, you’ve probably stumbled across the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum. With its sharp angles, futuristic metal siding, and glass that seems to slice through the sky, the Broad isn’t just another college building. It’s an MSU landmark that’s as bold as it is unconventional.

A Gift That Made It Possible

The Broad Museum exists thanks to a generous gift from Eli and Edythe Broad, both MSU alumni and major philanthropists. Their donation led to the creation of a world-class art museum right in East Lansing. After years of planning, the museum officially opened its doors in 2012.

Designed by a Legend: Zaha Hadid

To match MSU’s forward-looking spirit, the university hired Zaha Hadid, one of the most famous architects of our time. Known for her bold, futuristic designs, Hadid was the first woman to receive the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize. Her work can be seen across the globe, from China to Italy, and now, right here in East Lansing.

Sharp lines, dramatic angles, and a sense of movement frozen in steel and glass. It looks like it could take off at any moment, which is why so many Spartans lovingly call it “the spaceship.”

More Than Just a Cool Building

Inside, the Broad focuses on contemporary art. Think 20th and 21st century works that challenge, inspire, and get people talking. The museum hosts international exhibits, showcases up and coming artists, and even highlights student work. It’s a hub for creativity and conversation, bringing new perspectives to campus with every show.

Lights, Camera, Action

You might recognize the Broad from the big screen too. Parts of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2014) were filmed right here. The building’s futuristic vibe made it the perfect backdrop for Gotham. Beyond Hollywood moments, the Broad regularly hosts community events, lectures, and performances.

A Campus Icon

Not everyone agreed with the spaceship look when it first landed on campus, but over time, the Broad has become a defining piece of MSU’s identity. It’s the kind of building you can’t ignore, whether you love it or scratch your head at it. Either way, it puts MSU on the map for innovative design and shows off our willingness to embrace the unexpected.

Plan Your Visit

Here’s the best part: admission is free. The Broad is open to the public, and because exhibitions rotate regularly, there’s always something new to see. Whether you’re an art lover, a student looking to explore, or just curious about the spaceship on campus, it’s worth stepping inside.

Address: 547 E Circle Dr, East Lansing, MI 48824

Final Thoughts

The Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum is more than just a building, it’s a symbol of Michigan State’s bold spirit. It challenges us to look forward, embrace creativity, and maybe even dream a little bigger.
