A Gift That Made It Possible

The Broad Museum exists thanks to a generous gift from Eli and Edythe Broad, both MSU alumni and major philanthropists. Their donation led to the creation of a world-class art museum right in East Lansing. After years of planning, the museum officially opened its doors in 2012.

Designed by a Legend: Zaha Hadid

To match MSU’s forward-looking spirit, the university hired Zaha Hadid, one of the most famous architects of our time. Known for her bold, futuristic designs, Hadid was the first woman to receive the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize. Her work can be seen across the globe, from China to Italy, and now, right here in East Lansing.

Sharp lines, dramatic angles, and a sense of movement frozen in steel and glass. It looks like it could take off at any moment, which is why so many Spartans lovingly call it “the spaceship.”

You might recognize the Broad from the big screen too. Parts of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2014) were filmed right here.
