Can You Drink Alcohol at Michigan State Tailgates?

Tailgating at Michigan State is a tradition... green and white everywhere, grills firing up, and fans getting hyped before kickoff. But one question you might be wondering is:

“Can you drink alcohol at MSU tailgates?”

The short answer: Yes.
The longer answer: Yes, but there are rules.

Let’s break it down.

Tailgating Rules at Michigan State

At the time of this writing, MSU does allow alcohol in designated tailgating areas on campus, but with a few important guidelines to keep in mind:

  • Alcohol is allowed in public parking lots on game days. The usual open container rules are lifted during official tailgate hours.

  • Lots typically open at 7 a.m. for day games and 11 a.m. for night games. Once the game kicks off, drinking is supposed to stop.

  • Kegs and common-source containers (like jungle juice or beer tubs) are banned.

  • Underage drinking is still illegal and enforced.

  • Pedestrian zones and areas close to Spartan Stadium are alcohol-free. Don't bring a drink when you're walking to your seat!

These rules help keep tailgates fun and safe for everyone. And yes, MSU Police absolutely do patrol and issue citations when needed.

What About Inside Spartan Stadium?

In 2023, MSU officially joined the list of schools that sell alcohol inside the stadium. You can now buy beer and hard seltzers at select stands starting one hour before kickoff, and alcohol sales continue until the end of the third quarter.

Couple quick notes:

  • You can’t bring alcohol in or take it out.

  • You’ll need a valid ID to buy (obviously).

  • Lines can get long, so plan accordingly.

Final Thoughts

Tailgating at Michigan State is one of the best parts of being a Spartan fan. Just make sure you're following the rules so you don’t end up ruining your day (or someone else’s).

We’ll be out there, too! Probably near a grill, handing out some stickers, and sipping a cold one (legally). See you on game day!
